Microbial hitchhikers: dynamics of bacterial populations in ballast water during a trans-Pacific voyage of a bulk carrier

چکیده
Bacterial abundance, population dynamics and related environmental parameters were determined in bal last water during a transPacific voyage from Japan to the west coast of Canada. Water samples were collected from four ballast tanks, two of which underwent mid-ocean exchange (MOE) and two that remained unexchanged (control). Bacterial abundances in the unexchanged tanks increased from ~6.4×10 cells/L on Day 0 to 1.8×10 cells/L on Day 7, whereas in MOE tanks, abundances increased from approximately 8.6×10 cells/L (Day 0) to 2.2×10 cells/L (Day 10) before MOE (Day 14). After Day 10, bacterial abundances in all ballast tanks declined. Despite the greater decline in MOE tanks, the final abundances in the MOE and unexchanged tanks were not significantly different, which suggests MOE alone is not effective in reducing the risk of transferring the number of bacteria. Bacterial abundance was assessed with respect to changes in environmental parameters within the tanks and we found a significant increase with increased temperatures and a decrease with increased dissolved oxygen concentrations (p<0.001). If the relationship between bacterial abundance and both temperature and dissolved oxygen concentrations is shown to be a general characteristic for ballast water, new control protocols could be developed to minimize the number of bacteria being debal lasted into coastal harbors.

Changes in Microbial Communities, Including both Uncultured and Culturable Bacteria, with Mid-Ocean Ballast-Water Exchange during a Voyage from Japan to Australia
We assessed changes in the microbial communities in ballast water during a trans-Pacific voyage from Japan to Australia that included a mid-ocean ballast-water exchange. Uncultured (i.e., total) and culturable bacteria were counted and were characterized by using denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis (DGGE). There was a clear decrease over time in numbers of uncultured microorganisms, except ...

We characterized the physical/chemical conditions and the algal and bacterial assemblages in ballast water from 62 ballast tanks aboard 28 ships operated by the U.S. Military Sealift Command and the Maritime Administration, sampled at 9 ports on the U.S. West Coast and 4 ports on the U.S. East Coast. The ballast tank waters had been held for 2–176 days, and 90% of the tanks had undergone ballas...
متن کاملPopulation attenuation in zooplankton communities during transoceanic transfer in ballast water
Successful biological invasion requires introduction of a viable population of a nonindigenous species (NIS). Rarely have ecologists assessed changes in populations while entrained in invasion pathways. Here, we investigate how zooplankton communities resident in ballast water change during transoceanic voyages. We used next-generation sequencing technology to sequence a nuclear small subunit r...

Ships transport about 80 percent of world trade and transfer approximately three to five billion tons of ballast water internationally every year. Due to the likely presence of pollutants, the ballast water discharged by ships can have negative effects on aquatic ecosystems. This study was conducted on 10 ships that entered the Bushehr port to determine the effectiveness of the ballast water ex...
